The Soft Breeze of a Change of Seasons

Swung the door open on Sunday, expecting normal late summer Texas weather, only to be shocked by a cool breeze.  Fall arrived right on time.  I ran back inside telling everyone to plan to spend the day outside.  Our week of fall was here and you don’t want to waste it.

I have the same sense that a new season is blowing into my life.

My two oldest children have left the nest and only the youngest chickadee remains.  College tours and the stress of waiting to receive acceptance letters is still ahead of us, but I feel the breeze of a change in seasons.

My friends talk about retirement, financial plans and how they want to spend their after work years.  And a breeze ruffles my hair reminding me a change of seasons is coming.

Ecclesiastes 3
There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

2     a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
3     a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
4     a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
5     a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
6     a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
7     a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
8     a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace. (NIV)

A question arises from this thought.  What purpose will my empty nest years serve.  This new season follows years of secular work in business and lay work in churches; years of babies, children and teens, and years of mistakes and sound decisions.

I traveled with my Lord through a season of needing forgiveness and a season of His teaching me to forgive myself.  What a wild season.  It followed a season of pain that I brought on myself.  He didn’t just heal me.  The Lord took me on an exciting trip where He taught me he acts in our world today.  He taught me to listen to his voice. (I slip away at times, but I have never ever again doubted He is out there and cares about my day to day). God taught me walking with Him can be fun.

We traveled together through a season when He gave me an advance education regarding letting go of fear.  He showed me that fear highlights an area where I have not given something over to God.  That summer every where I went and everything I read dealt with one topic.  I didn’t seek out this education.  He chose it for me.  We worked through how fear results from idols in our lives.  Peace comes when we trust God even accepting the loss of what we love.  I had to learn to daily give what matter most to me over to God.  I actually would awake in the morning and place everything important on the altar before God as a symbolic way to remind myself it belonged to God.   Man is it hard to not take things back off that altar.

Now, I get hints of a new journey God wants me to take with Him.  Just as with Fear, God keeps prodding me with the idea of Charity (Christian Love) and Mercy.  My intuition tells me this journey is preparing me for the new season of life gently blowing into my life over the next few years.

Well, I am ready.  I don’t want to waste this season as I have wasted some seasons in the past.

Branch

John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

The tender growth are the branches that grow from the strong solid vine.  The eventual fruit of these vines will grow from these tender, well tended, branches.  The branch has several purposes, but without the vine, it does not have the nourishment or stability to create fruit.

We are to be one with Christ. God provided the Holy Spirit to be that force inside us which connects us to Jesus and to the Father.

John 14:

15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

Tomorrow we look at the fruit of the vine; then we can focus on gardening.

Easy Street or The Path of the Cross

Salvation comes through repentance from sin and trusting in Christ’s death as a sacrifice for those sins.

But once we are saved we are called to be followers of Jesus.  The path may or may not be an easy one.  To often, we think once saved God melds to our will.  Our prayers provide a gentle life with no troubles of any kind.  Yet when we read what Jesus said would be required of those who chose to be a follower of Christ it appears to not be exactly Easy Street.  Yet it is the the greatest path a person can choose to take.

Luke 9

23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.

 

Patrick tells us about women who choose the path of the Cross.

So, how is it that in Hibernia, where they never had any knowledge of God but, always, until now, cherished idols and unclean things, they are lately become a people of the Lord, and are called children of God; the sons of the Irish and the daughters of the chieftains are to be seen as monks and virgins of Christ

Thanks be to God, six days from then, opportunely and most eagerly, she took the course that all virgins of God take, not with their fathers’ consent but enduring the persecutions and deceitful hindrances of their parents.

Notwithstanding that, their number increases, (we do not know the number of them that are so reborn) besides the widows, and those who practice self-denial. Those who are kept in slavery suffer the most. They endure terrors and constant threats, but the Lord has given grace to many of his handmaidens, for even though they are forbidden to do so, still they resolutely follow his example.

Day 22:Without Me ye Can Do Nothing.

As soon as I set my mind to do even one aspect of the many traits of Agape love, I fail.  I can’t do it. I fail even with my family who I hold the dearest of all.  Imagine how short my determination gets with people who don’t share DNA with me.

When I should be patient; I lose it.

My kindness leads to my resentment

Envy, pride and selfishness sneak into my day to day.  I only see them after I act.  But they are for sure a major part of my life

My temper flares and I promise you I am keeping a list of everything that others have done against me.

I try to “always” protect, trust, hope and persevere, but I fall short of always.

Can you imagine what a testimony we could be if we lived Agape love, but how?

I believe Jesus explained to us how this is to be done in John 14-16.

We can only love with Agape love if we are one with Jesus.  Not if we are believers.  Not if we go to church on Sunday or even say a prayer every evening before we go to bed.  We must be one with Jesus through the spirit.

John 15 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.

11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

Paul also tells us that Agape is one of the fruit of the spirit.

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

 So the question is how to walk in the Spirit.

First bible verse I ever memorized.

Hebrews 11:1  Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.

Hope is the belief that a desire we have will happen. Or to wish for something with the expectation that it will occur.

Our hope for salvation in this life and the next rest in Jesus.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life

I understand my hope in Christ; it provides my purpose in life.  I think about the lyrics to an old hymn when I think of the word hope.

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly trust in Jesus’ Name.

But when we look at agape love; a characteristic of this type of love is hope.  Agape hopes always.  This is a hope not directed towards ourself, but a hope focused on others.

I started looking up quotes on hope and hopelessness.  The concept of hopelessness almost depresses you just thinking about the word.  People face moments of hopelessness during their lives, we are called to share our hope with others.  Not just the hope of salvation and heaven.  But we should share our hope in the day to day.

But I also think we are to hope for our fellow Christians, our brothers and sisters in Christ.  We desire good things in their life and we believe through Jesus these good things will come to them.  We share hope for the day to day.

Think about it.  Agape hopes all things.  We hope for others the good things of God.  We desire the rich life, the full life, the promises of Christ and we believe the Holy Spirit will provide them.  When you invest this level of care for another, it is hard to tear them down.  You build up those who you desire to see reach the heights of the Christian life.  You won’t sabatoge them, you will be patient with them because you trust they will succeed.

Hope directed towards others makes it difficult to not care.

Let’s parse this one.  Agape trusts all.

I understand my love for Christ is a love which trusts Jesus in all things in all ways.  Why?  Because He has proven himself trust worthy to me.  I know that even when things seem strange and out of sorts that Jesus has it all under control and eventually it will work out for good.

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Love requiring trust makes sense to me when it is us loving Jesus.  Why?  Because Jesus is trust worthy.

But turn it slightly, I know Jesus Agape me.  But I am not a trustworthy person at all.  I mean to be.  I really do.  I am like the disciples who kept falling asleep while Jesus prayed.  My spirit is willing but my flesh weak.

Matthew 28:40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?

41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Why would Jesus have any trust in me?  I know He knows I will fail Him.  Yet Jesus loves me with agape love.  Jesus believes in me.  Jesus believes in you.  Jesus spoke about you and about me in his prayer.  He believed in us.  See His words.  He trusted us.

John 17:18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

We trust Jesus, that is the foundation of our relationship with Him.  We trust him for salvation and we are to trust Him through every stage of our lives.  We see He actually has faith in us that through our walk with Him we will grow towards the perfection of being one with Him and the Father.

But we are also called to have faith in our brothers and sisters in Christ.  We need to show them we have confidence in them.  We know if they hold on tight to Jesus he can do a great work in them.  When they are weak, we may have to help them hold on.  But Agape love trusts.  We are to believe in our fellow Christians just as Jesus believes in us.  They may fail us on occasion, but we are all in this growing process together.  Jesus believes in me even when the flesh is weak.

In 1 Corinthians 13:7, the word translated beareth can also be translated cover, protect, keep secret, conceal, endure.

Thus our sentence could read

Agape beareth all. And we could make an argument that deep love endures the problems and issues of others.  You take onto yourself a portion of their burden.

Love protects all.  I think Agape love protects others from the evil of this world when possible.  You may have to allow someone you love to face the results of their decisions, but that also is a type of protection.  Allowing someone to learn in a safe environment so they do not have to learn in an unprotected environment.

Love covers all.  Think deck or roof.

My vision of this is a protective cover.  I see someone throwing themselves over a friend to protect them from harm.  It makes me think of Jesus’ comment during the triumphant entry into Jerusalem. 

Luke13: 34 

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!

Love endures all

Love endures the pain and the problems of others.  We suffer for another.  Think how much our Lord endured for us.

Hebrew 12: 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

He endured the cross not for anything he had done but he took upon himself our sins and our punishment.  He endured it all out of love for us.

Luke 19:19 And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.

2 And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.

Zacchaeus represents our unrighteous one. As the chief tax collector Zacchaeus worked for the Romans to gather taxes.  His income came from the additional money he charged above the money actually owed to the Romans.We see he was rich.This implies he charged quite a bit above the required tax.

We should not rejoice in the sins of Zacchaeus, but what does that look like:

Luke 19:3 And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.

4 And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.

5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.

6 And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.

7 And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.

Jesus tells Zacchaeus that he will dine with him.  We never see Jesus condoning the actions of the man, but we see him still caring and loving the man.

Then we see Zacchaeus moving to the truth.  He makes a commitment to change his life.  He seeks righteousness.

Luke 19:8 And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.

And Jesus rejoices in the man finding the righteousness and the truth.

9 And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.

10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

But those in the crowd do not rejoice that a man who had been walking in unrighteousness might discover the truth if he speaks with Jesus.
Luke 19:7 And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.
They have no Agape love for this sinner.  They hold it agains Jesus for being with this man who is a sinner.  A common used phrase these days is “hate the sin and love the sinner”.  I think this is what is meant here.
While they are yet a sinner, we should love them like Jesus did.  And like he still does.

Agape does not rejoice in unrighteousness of heart and life

Agape rejoices in truth

 

 

We do not love others with true love if we rejoice in the unrighteousness in their hearts and lives.

Roman 1 discusses unrighteousness.  We should never rejoice when lives slip into these harmful ways of living and thinking.

24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

 

But we rejoice that God loved us and loved all the people in the world so much that He sent His only son to die for our unrighteousness. Agape love longs for those who have fallen into the unrighteous life to turn back to the truth.  There is joy, happiness and peace in the truth.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?

10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.

12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.

30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

 

Let us rejoice in the truth.  Let us desire the truth in the life of all who love.  Let us rejoice in Jesus.

Day 8: Weaving Together Kindness

Next trait of Love.  Love is Kind
So what does it mean to be kind.  Let’s look at the dictionary.

ADJECTIVE:
kind·er, kind·est

  1. Of a friendly, generous, or warm-hearted nature.
  2. Showing sympathy or understanding; charitable: a kind word.
  3. Humane; considerate: kind to animals.
  4. Forbearing; tolerant: Our neighbor was very kind about the window we broke.
  5. Generous; liberal: kind words of praise.
  6. Agreeable; beneficial: a dry climate kind to asthmatics.

 

I’ve thought long and hard about the word kind.  Be kind.  We sort of know it when we see it. But when you try to define it, you use words that are only part of what you mean.

But when you look at the life of Christ you see how the parts weave together into a life of kindness. 

 
Showing sympathy or understanding

Mark 5:35 While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?

36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.

37 And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.

38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.

39 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.

40 And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.

41 And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.

Considerate

Matthew 1413 When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.

14 And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.

15 And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.

16 But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.

17 And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.

18 He said, Bring them hither to me.

Caring

Matthew 20:29 And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.

30 And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David.

31 And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David.

32 And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you?

33 They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.

34 So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.

 

Giving
