I am the true vine — Jesus’ words
I realize many plants grow as vines, but we are talking grape vines. The vine is the main structure of the grapevine. The vine winds up from the roots and chooses the direction the plant will grow. The branches, the fruit, the leaves everything spreads out from the vine. Running through the vine are tissues (phloem and xylem). Through these systems the sap and all the nutrients the plant needs are moved from the leaves to where it is needed. Or minerals and water are pulled up from the roots to supply the branches and to produce the fruit. The vine stores excess carbohydrates in the trunk and roots during the good times to provide the plant when times are less favorable.
Jesus, through the Holy Spirit is our vine. He directs our growth in the direction which is best. He provides the spiritual, emotional and physical needs for us. He stores for us what is needed in the hard times. We are nothing without the vine. Even the fruit of the vine withers and dries up once picked.
But Jesus promised to send us the Holy Spirit who makes us one with Christ; who is one with the Father.
John 14:
16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
